getting the shakes

Sometimes when I am feeling fatigued I get the shakes really bad. It gets so bad that I can't hold on to anything and feel like the floor is about to be ripped out from under me. When this happens the shaking is so bad that anyone looking at me can see I am shaking. Sometimes the shaking episodes are constant and don't stop until I rest, but sometimes they run in cycles. The cycles will be like 10 minutes of shaking and 30 minutes of just being tired. When it happens at home, I can crawl into bed and have a nap. When it happens elsewhere, that is when I have the problem. People ask me why I am shaking. I don't know what causes it other than being tired and I don't know how tocontrol it until I can get home. Getting plenty of sleep the night before is usually not an option as I have more than one sleep disorder. Does anyone else go through this? Does anyone have any suggestions for how to handle these public situations?

Have you had a sleep study or a neurological workup? If not then please check with your doctor. It may also be a simple matter of needing to do relaxation exericses to burn off the days stress before you climb into bed. Not sure so please talk to your doctor. Good luck and let me know what you find out.

Before I started taking Xyrem I couldn't even go to the grocery store without have the shakes and losing strength in my legs due to the cataplexy so I know how you feel it is so embarrassing to me when it happens in public because everyone stares at me like I'm crazy. The Xyrem has really helped me I have one or two episodes a day if that but nobody can tell that I'm getting shaky unless they see my face start twitching.

I have already heard about shakes but your situation seems to be very bad. I think you should take it seriously and consult your doctor. And I suggest to take rest until you feel better. Eat juicy fruits to keep your blood circulation smooth.

I've never seen/heard of anyone talk about "the shakes" before. (I was just diagnosed with idiopathic hypersomnia.) But when I saw your post I had to read it, because when I am overwhelmed with anticipation and tired, I get "the shakes". It has only happened to me a couple of times in my life, so it never occurred to me that it could be related to my sleep disorder.

I haven't been reading up on it very long, but I've never seen anyone mention this before, so I think Tracy's advice is good. Do you live in an area where you could find a new doctor? If you have a diagnosis, any doctor can give you your prescriptions. Also, maybe you should post this in the forum on Narcolepsy Network's website. It seems to have more users. Actually, now that you point it out, I might post my story of the shakes on there.

Please keep us posted on what you find out.

I would report this asap to your doctor. Are you diabetic? It could be low blood sugar. Regardless…ask your doctor. I am not familiar with any reasons sleep related that this could be happening.
    take care…

Thanks for answering me. It is not my diabetes. I have checked. As for telling my doctor, he doesn't seem to want to bother with anything I have to say about my problems. I am not impressed with him, but until I can find something better I stick with him for prescriptions and referrals to speciallists.

auntie bear…I am not a doctor, but have you considered dehydration? its so hot - make sure you are keeping yourself hydrated by drinking LOTS of water!
bummer about your doctor…i hope you find another soon, one that you can communicate well with!
    hugs -

Not sure about the dehydration. There are some times it might be possible but other times I am not sure about. I know the most usual trigger for this has to do with getting overly tired. So I am going to try drinking more fluids when this happens and see if it helps. Thanks.
